In Los Angeles, the first goal from the Costa Ricans came early, after a VAR revision that awarded an early PK to the visitors.
Roughly an hour later, following a missed routine save from McCarthy, the ball ended up in the back of his net after an extra touch-in from Aaron Suarez to make it 2–0 minutes into the second half.
The game seemed to be moving towards a dramatic finish before Captain Carlos Vela settled it for LAFC to make it 4-2 on aggregate.
The champions move on and now face Vancouver. At the same time, Alajuelense gains fierce competitor status and not much else, as the valiant effort on a cold night in Los Angeles was impressive but simply not enough to revert a very bad 3-0 result at home.
