USL 2 is part of the so-called “path-to-pro” created by the United Soccer League, which also organizes the (second division) and (third).

In simpler words, the league is the first contact of many young players with professional football, since, in a period of almost three months, young players live a day to day of professionals, training, traveling and playing. Most athletes come from universities and use the vacation period to play at USL 2 and stay active. Others are pulled from the clubs’ own academies to join the squads.
